Market intelligence firm IDC has published a new report on the mobile phone market and it says that in Q3 some 393.7 million units were shipped worldwide. This translates into a 12.8% on-year increase, higher than the 9.3% growth predicted by IDC a while ago.
Despite the healthy, two-digit increase, IDC noted that Q3 has seen a decline in shipments in the United States and Western Europe. Sales in the US were hurt by the delay of Apple's new iPhone while in Western Europe the economic worries slashed user demand for both feature phones and smartphones.
Going over the vendor top, we see Nokia still holding the crown thanks to shipments of 106.6 million units (down 3.4% on-year) which translate into a market share of 27.1%. In the second sport there's Samsung Electronics with 87.8 million units (up 23% on-year) and a share of 22.3%.
LG Electronics grabbed the third place and a market share of 5.4% on shipments of 21.1 million phones (down 25.7%) while ZTE managed to surpass Apple and take the fourth place and 4.9% of the market. ZTE's shipments topped 19.1 million units, up 57.9% on-year. As for Apple, who's probably going to do a lot better in Q4, it shipped 17.1 million iPhones (up 21.3% on-year) and secured for itself 4.3% of the phone market.
Combined, the rest of the phone companies shipped 142 million units, up 26.2%.
